I wanted to share one particular page here, just because it is so much fun. It would be so much fun for everyone to comment on this post or on our Facebook page and see just how many cool names we can generate with this one! It is sure to result in some really fun results.

Holiday is over - New Loresmyth Office
over 2 years ago – Tue, Aug 31, 2021 at 07:21:26 PM

Hello, dear Remarkable backers!

The long 7-week summer school holiday here in the Netherlands is almost over, which means "the situation" (as my wife and I like to call it) returns to normal again soon. Having two young kids at home for seven weeks straight is a marathon for sure. The past months have been incredibly busy alltogether, and a lot of long-term things I had planned for the company are coming into effect, in addition to the development of our books moving forward. Here's an update on what's happening.

New Loresmyth office

After having worked from home since I started Loresmyth, this week I moved into a new office space to signal the new chapter in growing Loresmyth. I am very excited about it, and you can read more on our website's blog. A whole new phase in our company is starting now, and despite covid making things extremely difficult, we are hyped to share the journey with you!

Hullo there...

Remarkable Cults Development

Progress on the book is going very well, and we are excited about how this installment has turned out. We have decided to take a couple of months extra, extend our development schedule to allow for more "polishing" room in terms of re-writes, additional artwork, and more. This means we may deliver slightly later than our original Kickstarter timeline, but still very neatly within a good timeframe. In the end, we want to make the best product we can, and we feel we can top ourselves with this one.

As mentioned in the previous update, writers and editors have finished, and the current status is the layout phase. Things are looking insanely good (biased opinion alert) but very soon you will be able to judge for yourself because we plan to have a first preview version ready in September, for backers to have a look at. After that, we will take time to make any changes that come out of the feedback process, and move towards getting the book ready for manufacturing.

The promise of eternal life

Covid Price Increases

Covid continues to incur heavy delays, price increases for printing and shipping, so we are having a look at how to best cope with it, as are all RPG creators at the moment. A Kickstarter campaign is planned and budgeted a year in advance, taking into account price quotes from that moment. We always plan with some buffer, but at the moment prices are rising so fast and out of proportion, it exceeds all realistic plannings. Initially, covid mainly brought us positive things as more people purchased online which was good for our sales. At the moment, many creators including us are feeling the slow backlash of Covid build-up, as the rising costs have gone beyond a point small creators can bear. Shipping books from Europe to the USA would cost us around $2500 for a container last year, and currently, prices reach up to $15.000 for the same container.

At the moment we will focus on finishing the book contents, then we will look into the current manufacturing and shipping prices again and make decisions from there. Perhaps the market calms down a bit and prices come back down. We like to avoid changing our shipping rates and product pledge prices in Backerkit if we can. There's a chance that at least shipping rates will rise, so we don't have to bear all the cost increases ourselves, but whatever ends up being the real scenario, we will keep you posted as we have more accurate information. We don't want to cause any panic, but also like to keep you informed of the extreme state of the market right now.

It's enough to make us all undead! LOL

That's it for this update. If you like to reach out, join our Discord channel and chat!

Chapter Spread Art Previews
almost 3 years ago – Sat, Jul 24, 2021 at 10:49:44 PM

Hello, dear Remarkable backers!

Today we wanted to show off some artwork of the Remarkable Cults book that we think you will love. The chapter-opening "spreads" have become a staple of the series design, and with Cults we brought on board some of our favorite artists. Besides strong writing, the artwork is the next thing in a book that invokes that feeling of inspiration and helps bring our roleplaying worlds alive.

Cults Chapter Spread Art Previews

Nefarious artifacts on display by Ferdinand Ladera

Ferdinand Ladera worked on the Wondrous Expeditions book, and we enjoy his style a lot. He was excited to work on Remarkable Cults as well once work on Wondrous was wrapping.  Special care went into designing the composition so no important details would get lost in the pages' centerfold area.

Timerus, leader of the Justicars passing judgement by Jens Kuczwara.

Jens Kuczwara has been a long-time collaborator and you will know him from the Heroic Challenges box art as well as the Wondrous Expeditions Forests book cover. Jens runs his own art studio from Austria and is an all-round creative powerhouse.  Jens also created many of the Cult leader color portraits, which we may reveal a few of in future updates.

There are a few more spectacular art pieces that we are going to keep a surprise for now, but stay tuned for much more updates on the Remarkable Cults development.

Looking back at Remarkable Inns

We posted a fun little video on our Youtube channel, looking back at the book that started the Remarkable series. This book has such a special place in our hearts, and it was even featured on Forbes.

If you don't own this book yet, we have a 15% off sale going on until the end of July on everything in the Loresmyth store (except things that are already discounted). We are starting to use our Youtube channel a bit more going forward, so if you like to see behind-the-scenes material and other insights, follow along!

Wishing everyone a great weekend!

Talk again soon,

Chris VDL

New Survey! Online Courses for RPG Creators?
almost 3 years ago – Mon, Jul 19, 2021 at 05:44:53 AM

Hello, dear Remarkable backers.

I hope everyone is doing great and keeping safe. Writing you from my garden in the Netherlands, where this week has started out exceptionally sunny!

What it takes to create roleplaying products

Today I wanted to ask you about something we've been pondering for some time. In addition to creating our products, you know we really like showing the behind-the-scenes process of how products get made. There's a whole world of things that goes into making roleplaying books from writing to illustrating and getting it printed, to planning and launching crowdfunding campaigns, logistics & warehousing, and what it takes to turn a hobby into a business. If you are a creator yourself, you will know just how much work goes into making a book, things that most don't see. You may even be looking to learn how to learn these skills yourself to get better to turn your passion into a living.

Sharing the Experience

I've had help from Christopher Haskins at Nord Games at a moment when I was working for another company I had co-founded, and I was debating the reality of turning Loresmyth into a business. Here we are several years later, and we've come a long way. Having a mentor is incredibly important in life, and for me in the beginning this was Chris at Nord Games (among others). I like to share in return our combined experience so that others can benefit from it.

Online Courses? So the thing I've been considering is developing online courses that are specifically tailored to roleplaying creators. Just how do you get started? How do you structure and budget a development cycle? How do you contract artists and writers? How do you get books printed? How do you go about launching a successful Kickstarter?

When you are just starting out, or even if you are already an indie creator, it can be really challenging to find information online that is specific to our industry. So, we think we could offer something really valuable by chronicling our experience into an online video course.

Take the Survey

So, before we actually dive into this wonderful new endeavor, we love to hear your thoughts. Are you a hobby, indie, or even a professional creator? Then this survey is for you, and it only takes a couple of minutes to fill out.

GO TO THE SURVEY

Example Video

As an example of the kind of production quality you could expect, we put together a video on our Youtube that gives you an idea. Our courses would be cataloged into various subjects such as Ideation, Creation, Crowdfunding, Marketing, and more. The survey above will help us learn what the most valuable topics would be for you as a creator.

The training videos would of course not include the Youtubey bits like "call to subscribe" etc, but you get the point most likely :-)

Regards

Chris VDL .
